My Take On Discounts
Should You Do Them Or Not In Your Emails?

The eCommerce Marketing Newsletter
What’s up, it’s Varun from The eCommerce Marketing Newsletter.
Let’s talk about something I see way too often – brands overdoing discounts with their emails.
Look, discounts work.
They drive sales. They get people to click. They push for that quick cash boost when you need it.
But if you rely on discounts all the time, you’re setting your brand up to fail long-term.
Here’s what actually happens when you blast your list with sales every week:
Customers get trained to wait for the next sale.
Why buy today when they know another 20% off is coming next Tuesday?
Your product starts feeling cheaper.
Even if it’s high quality, constant discounts lower the perceived value.
You’re squeezing your margins.
Every sale might look good on paper, but profit per order? Shrinking.
You become “that brand.”
The one people only shop from when there’s a discount. Not because they love you.
True brand loyalty isn’t built on 30% off emails every other day.
It’s built on showing up with value, consistency, and products people actually want – at a price they believe is fair.
You’re killing your brand.
If every email is just “BUY NOW – SALE ENDS SOON,” you’re killing your brand.
You’re not building a relationship.
You’re just creating deal-hunters who will leave as soon as someone else offers 5% more off.
Discounts are a tool – but not the strategy.
Use them smartly, not constantly.
Your brand – and your profits – will thank you later.
